13 - Toxicity

George Fine was tired. He had been working since 6am in the experimental hive, and as if the problems confronting him were not already complicated enough, there had been a row with Sheldon Hubbard.

He could see Hubbard now through the glass partitions, his two wings of dark hair standing straight up. The zoologist, in his white lab coat, seemed to be everywhere at once as he drove the bee factory to completion. His energy was inexhaustible. George Fine envied him that.

The experimental hive and the lab area were located on the second floor of the building. All interior structures built for the facility were glass, and so were the hives, which were equipped with' Derrick safety features. It had been done rapidly - too rapidly, in Fine's opinion. Meticulous as always, he had gone over the hive complex almost bolt by bolt, investigating every feature. He thought the doors to the chambers where the bees were kept opened the wrong way - in. He even objected to the handles and catches, which appeared flimsy to him. In his haste to get rolling, Hubbard had cut corners.
